First Day of School

Today was my first day of classes. Before we even got to school, my roommate Vaneisha and I bought tamales from a woman who lives nearby and they were really good! I bought the tamale dulce. Then we walked to school and took a different way which cut out some time so we made it within 35 minutes, which is really good! Then I went to my first class which is psychology and leadership. This class was taught completely in Spanish (all of my classes are taught completely in spanish) and I was the only international student in my class. We then got put into groups and are working on a short project that we have to present on Friday. After class however I was super confused as to what the homework was because the professor said one thing was homework while the syllabus said another and the sheet he put on the screen said another. So I went to the library to send him an email and look for a book that I am supposed to bring to next class. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the book, so I'm going to try again tomorrow probably and ask the librarian where the heck this book is located. Fortunately, my professor just emailed me back and said all I have to do for homework is bring this book I'm supposed to find and be ready to present with my group. Thank goodness. Then I ate lunch which was more of my tamale and a sandwich that my host mom made. Then I was off to my next class which is mexican culture and identity. The professor never showed up though so we waited there for a half hour and then we all left. Then I had my next class which is cinema and culture. I was once again the only international student in this class and confused for a good part of class. The professor was explaining this chinese story that was similar to the movie inception and I barely understood inception in english, so this was kind of confusing. I once again didn't know what the homework was or if we had any so I asked the professor and he said we didn't have any homework and there isn't a textbook for the class either! sidenote: I haven't had to buy any textbooks for my classes. I guess they aren't really a big deal here??? Then I had my last class which is mexican literature. I thought this class was going to be a complete drag and horrible like most literature classes are; however, it was the complete opposite!!! There are only 7 students in my class and half of them are international students from the US. My professor is very fun and enthusiastic and it turns out, he did his Masters at Western. I think Mexican Literature is going to be my favorite class just because the atmosphere is so fun and inviting. After my long day at school I took the bus home all alone once again. I'm actually getting good at taking the bus home. I even got off at the stop my host mom told me to get off at. At other times, I would get off earlier because I didn't want to miss the bus stop.

Then I got home and my host mom had made enchiladas verdes which were so so delicious! Then I checked email and stuff and got an email from my Hermano Mayor (big brother) Daniel. I signed up to be a part of this program, which is basically where they pair up an international student with a mexican student to be a big brother or big sister to the international student. My big brother will help me with things, invite me to things and do things with me, let me hang out with him and his friends, etc. Hopefully all goes well with that!

And a funny side note to end this post is that no one knows how to pronounce my last name even though it's 2 syllables. hahahaha.

Hasta luego!

  1. I am sure things will get easier as you get used to the classes and the professors all teaching in Spanish. I am glad you are meeting friends. Are you the only student at your host mom's house? You said you had a roommate. All is well here. We look forward to reading your posts! The pics are great!
