Yesterday there was a tamales event at school so I went to that and ate a tamale dulce y tamale with cheese. They were both so delicious! Unfortunately, my host mom doesn't know how to make them, at least that's what she told me. She said they were so much work to make. I will have to find someone to show me how to make them because it's definitely something I want to make back in the US. They can't take any longer to make than cinnamon rolls with yeast. Those take ALL DAY.
I also managed to take the free bus home 2 nights in a row. It starts going at 7 pm and goes from school and makes a little loop around and can drop me off at Plaza del Parque which is like 7 minutes or so by walking from where I live. I think I'll take that home whenever I'm at school past 7 because I'd rather save money by taking this bus home rather than pay for the other bus. Even though the other bus is cheap and takes less time to get home...I think I'll save some money.
Tomorrow with one of my classes, we are going on a field trip to eat lunch at a restaurant in el Centro. It's called Tecua and it's apparently some type of mayan restaurant or something. Laura said she's heard of it but has never gone there. She also said what type of food they have, but I can't remember the exact name of it. it's like mayan but that's not the name. I can't remember.
Also, in March there is a field trip with the international students that's going to Oaxaca and at first I wasn't going to go because it's a whole weekend trip and it leaves on Friday and I have class all day on Friday until 5:30, but then after talking to a few friends, I think I've decided that I'm going to go and if I have to skip a class or 2 on Friday, I will. I'll just let my professors know ahead of time. We are only allowed 6 absences per class per semester and so far I obviously haven't been absent, so if I keep up my great attendance record, it shouldn't be a problem. Let's hope!
Also, a lot of people have been talking about spring break/semana santa already even though it's not until April! but that's college students for you! Always looking forward to the next break from school that they have. I know a lot of people are thinking about going to Cancun. I still don't know if that's where I want to go though. I talked to a friend who studied here last year and asked him where he went for spring break here and he went to Puerto Escondido which is in Oaxaca, and he said it was really cool and fun and even said he'd give me the info for which hostel he stayed in and stuff. He said his hostel was right on the beach and was cheap too! I'll have to see what my friends want to do. It will be so weird going to an actual destination for spring break because I haven't done that, like ever. with the exception of Florida in 3rd grade which was like 13 years ago, and then spring break last year to Florida, but that was a mission trip, so it doesn't count. I'm not sure I even know how to have a proper spring break!!!!! AND NOW I FINALLY GET TO!
AND in other news, tomorrow will be the day I will have been in Mexico for exactly one month. It has gone by fast actually! I can't believe I've already been here one whole month. That is really crazy. My Spanish level isn't where I want it to be yet, but I'm hoping it will continue to improve. I really need to surround myself with spanish speakers more often. It's hard though sometimes because some of my friends either don't speak enough spanish to hold a lot of conversations, or they choose to not speak in spanish all the time, which is sad.
I still haven't met my older brother Daniel like I was supposed to. We were going to meet, but then there were a change of plans so I emailed the big brother/big sister program asking if I could have a new big brother or sister with a schedule that didn't conflict with mine so much. I really want at least one mexican friend! It's sometimes hard to make friends with mexicans though in classes when you're the only international student because it seems like they all have their friend group established already. :( I'll have to find at least one friend. JUST ONE! So hopefully my new big brother or sister can be that friend!
mexican rice with chicken and zucchini
tostadas with ham lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes and a spicy salsa and frijoles
pancakes with raspberry jam and syrup and some fruit.
Hola Leah!! Haha do you like my Spanish? That's about the extent of it. I know random words here and there, but I can't speak in sentences at all. My favorite Spanish word is sacapuntas. I remember learning it in high school. I just think it sounds really cool...a lot cooler than pencil sharpener!
ReplyDeleteUgh this post is making me so hungry! Dude, it would be awesome to go to Cancun! I'm sure it's probably pricey, unless you know a way around that, but still- just thinking about the possibility of it is fun. How far away is Cancun from where you are?
Thanks for your emails. I will get back to you today. You can email me anytime! I love getting emails from you :)
Have a great day today! It's 15 degrees right now, but it looks kinda windy so I don't know what the windchill is. Enjoy some warmth and sunshine for me!!
Love you!
