Mid week thoughts

Thought I'd quick write a little post because A: I don't have classes today, and B: I don't feel like working on homework right now or starting anything because lunch is in 25 minutes. My week has been going well. Unfortunately, I didn't go to salsa class on Monday or last Thursday because I was sick and I still am sick! This is getting ridiculous. It's probably because I'm not used to being sick. I'm never sick for this long. Usually it's a cold that lasts one week and then it's done and over with. This is day 8 of my illness and I'm ready for it to go. All I do is cough and I can't ear out of one ear which is irritating because it's hard enough understanding people when they talk when I can hear out of both ears.

Anyways, on Sunday I had a school project to do which was to go to this little restaurant called Tikua which specializes in food from Oaxaca or south eastern mexican food. So here are some pictures!
Chapata with goat cheese, turkey, and chorizo oaxaqueño. It was really good and not too spicy!

Here is a pic of some students performing their music in el Centro. Their little uniforms were so cute and pretty fancy compared to band outfits in the US

Some more students

Here are some chapulines! AKA grasshoppers. People in Oaxaca eat grass hoppers. So I was forced to try some. They actually weren't that bad, but I wouldn't eat them again. One time is good enough. They were a little spicy but not too bad.

I don't know what kind of meat this was but it was so good with the guacamole and tomatoes! I think it was a type of chorizo.

My beloved frappe type thingy. Chocolate and strawberries and very delightful. SO GOOD!

Other than my illness and eating grasshoppers, life has been good. I got reports back from the first partial and I got 100%, 98%, 92% and 95.25%. So I'd say I'm doing pretty well! Hopefully I can do just as well this second partial and the third too!!! Oh also, anything below 70% is failing, so they definitely don't mess around here! You definitely gotta work hard here at Tec. de Monterrey, but the assignments are a lot different than the US. There are so many different opinion type things I have to write here, which is weird because in the US, you NEVER write papers based on your opinion. So it's been something else trying to actually have or make up an opinion instead of just rephrase what authors write.
It's SO HOT HERE!!!! I checked the weather and it's going to be in the high 80s all week of course and OF COURSE it's going to be sunny every day with no rain! I don't know if this is drought season or what, but it's literally sunny every single day! It's only rained once since I've been here and that was for a few minutes.

I've also been thoroughly enjoying my free subscription to netlix. I've watched at least one or 2 movies every day and also an episode or 2 of the Fresh Prince of Bel Aire. It's been great! I will be sad when the free subscription is up because it's so nice being able to watch new movies and shows whenever I want. Maybe mom and dad will decide to start a netflix subscription again and share it with their beloved children? *hint hint* :)

Hasta Luego!

Mexico City for the Day

Yesterday I went to Mexico City for the day with 3 of my friends. It was so much fun! Mexico City is not like Queretaro. It's enormous! I would compare it to NYC. It's like a whole other world with so many people and so much traffic. Yet it is really beautiful with old buildings and cathedrals and monuments. I'm really glad I went, and it is definitely a city worth visiting if you ever have the time to! Here are a bunch of pictures that I took while in Mexico City for the day. The picture above is Catedral Metropolitana and it is very famous in Mexico City.

This is Palacio Nacional where the government offices of Mexico City are located. I believe this is also where the President works?

Catedral Metropolitana.

The restaurant where we ate. It was on the 7th floor!

My lunch: Enmoladas with mole negro.

SO MANY PEOPLE

Palacio de Bellas artes. This holds some really famous art from Diego Rivera.

People love to play in the fountains here!

We even took the subway in Mexico City! It reminded me of the subways in NYC

Ice cream! They use powdered milk here to make the ice cream rather than regular milk. That's why it tastes different.

I had a really great time in Mexico City. We saw so many amazing things and it is such a beautiful city! The bus ride to and from Mexico city wasn't bad either. It was like a greyhound bus but really nice which little individual tv's attached to each seat so we could watch movies and stuff. And there was lot of leg room and foot rests and they even gave us some snacks! And it was quite cheap too! I definitely wouldn't mind going to Mexico City again. It was great and I did some shopping too and the stuff I bought there was cheaper than what they sell it for here in Queretaro. Like I said before, Mexico City is like a whole other world. It's like NYC with so many people all the time and a lot of traffic all of the time! Also, people use their car horns all the time too! You know how you learn that the car horn is only to acknowledge someone and say "hi"? well, not here. It's the complete opposite! People are very impatient in their cars and beep their horn all the time. People are always trying to get to their destination as fast as possible which means a lot of people weave in and out of lanes trying to pass people left and right, and it doesn't help that the roads in the city center are bricks so of course there aren't lane lines so it's basically like you drive wherever your car can fit. It's nuts! I wouldn't ever like to drive here! People try to squeeze in small spaces and get ahead of buses and buses try to get ahead of cars and people are beeping their horns and brake really hard. And not very many people use their seat belts here either. Not to mention, I never see any speed limit signs! It's so weird! So I have no idea if people just go however fast they want? It's not like you can go very fast around Mexico City anyways because of all the people and traffic. But still. People drive like maniacs in Mexico City as well as in Queretaro! It makes driving in the US look so tame! Other than my cold that I have - at least I hope it's a cold- I've been well and enjoying life! The first set of partials are over and I already found out that I got a 100% in the first partial of my Psychology & leadership class and a 98% in the first partial of my Cinema class. (Partials are like marking periods more or less and there are 3 of them that make up one semester).

Other than that, nothing new has happened besides the fact that I have my free trial month of netflix and have been using that almost every day! It's great!

Hasta Luego!
